Mangotree Sculpture, Lamu, 2012   Willert
„I like to jump sometimes between projects – boats, sculpture, painting....“ Jesko says. This versatility certainly characterized his Lamu stay.Twice a week he traveled to Abus Workshop by boat from Shela to Lamu town to sculpt a trunk of mango wood almost three metres long. The final stele was the centerpiece in the courtyard of Baitil Aman during the exhibition of Lili Nalovi and Jesko Willert. On one side of the tall slab are the carved faces of a mother and two children, behind is the face of the father: a portrait of an African family. (Priya Basil)
