Wasserturmpalais, 2011

The 100 year old main building of the former Barmbek Hospital stood empty for 6 years before the exhibition by Lili Nalovi and Jesko Willert. There was no water or electricity. Before the artist couple could start with the actual construction of the exhibition on 700 square metres, they first had to close/secure 18 entrances and lay mains power lines and 500 meters of cabling to illuminate the bar, cinema and paintings on 2 levels. They also had to transport more than 1000 litres of water in cannisters to clean the building and to mix paint. Only then could all the walls, floors doors and stairs be painted and a 10 metre long bar constructed. A number of walls were draped with wall-hangings painted by the couple. In total, constructing the exhibition took about 6 weeks.
